11/7/2023 0 Comments Eli liquid snake![]() While he would be lead to believe that he was made to be the inferior member of this pair, in truth, he was the superior one, possessing advanced physical capabilities even in his youth. This is why I so wish we had the final confrontation with Eli - it would explain more of why he is the way he is and show that Venom is a demon not just because of the actions of war but because of how carrying the "meme" of Big Boss influences others.Liquid Snake (real name Eli) is one of three clones of the legendary Big Boss, created alongside Solid Snake as a pair of twins. Both Eli and Venom are phantoms tormented by the idea of "Big Boss" in some way - be it "gene" or "meme". "Meme" is the excuse for stripping the medic of his freedom, our "freedom" as Venom Snake is just constricted to the "meme" of Big Boss. Surpassing Big Boss's legacy and being better than him was Liquid's only hope of carving his own identity, he can't surpass him in gene but maybe he can in meme. "Gene" was Liquid's rationale for why his freedom was stripped from him, he had no other choice than to be Big Boss's bastard son and surpass his legacy. Imagine knowing that you were cloned from someone else, raised by adults who haven't earned your trust, raised for war, raised to be a copy of someone who doesn't even want you, someone who is considered a warlord, to know that you're "genetic garbage" and destined for war. I feel like making him a brat makes it harder for us to grasp why he is the way he is. I wish they did more with Eli's character and plot, make us get into his head and understand more of him. Plus they're both phantoms, copies of Big Boss robbed of self-determination, from Zero came "two Phantoms".which is not just Venom and Skullface, but also Venom and Eli. Adults try to raise them to be mature and responsible, but often we're just acting out more mature versions of the same things we did as kids. Kids try to act like adults by pretending to be tougher than they are. Just thought it was interesting how Eli and Venom's stories correspond, Venom unintentionally getting roped into the life of heightened reality and war that the Snake family lead. You're kidnapping men after all, and putting them in the brig if they don't comply. There's some level of respect that's held for the two snakes in MGSV (Liquid and Venom) but there's still a certain amount of fear that controls them. "Big Boss is watching you" read the posters around the base while the DD soldiers talk of how crazy Kaz is getting. This is what they know and nobody's going to take it from them.except another Snake.Įli is tougher than the other kids and is shown to keep them in line through force while the legend of Big Boss keeps the Diamond Dogs going. Conversely, Venom, Kaz, and the Diamond Dogs are just adult versions of Eli and his fellow child soldiers- Isolated and surrounded by water, they hope to perpetuate the cycle of war in a business that can't last but what other purpose do they have? They'll keep it going as long as they can. While Venom spanks this kid even with the homefield advantage he has (something Solid Snake would do to Venom years later), the Diamond Dogs attempt to rehabilitate Eli's boys and hope to have them realize there can be a life outside the battlefield. While all of this was done on purpose to illustrate Liquid's incapacity or outright refusal to break the cycle of war the majority of MGS characters are stuck in, it only recently occurred to me how this is similar to Venom as well. Before finding out his relation to the main character, he's isolated himself and his small army in a fight he knows can't last. This is not unlike when we were originally introduced to him. It's nasty and more or less pointless but it's what he knows and he thinks it gives him purpose. ![]() In playing MGSV, I thought it was a funny throwback to introduce Eli (Liquid Snake of course) as a boy playing at war with his fellow soldiers after having taken over a small ship stuck in the mud.
